Business Boom
January 08, 2008
HARLINGEN, TX - The dates are quickly approaching for Harlingen to become home to almost a dozen new businesses.
The biggest names include Walgreens, Starbucks, Logan's Roadhouse and Kohl's. The new Walgreens will be at The Woodmont Shopping center between Tyler and Harrison avenues near the Expressway 77/83 interchange.
Construction inside and outside of Walgreens will be completed by mid-January, said Bill Krieger, a superintendent for the project from W.B. Kibler Construction Co., Ltd., General Contractors out of Dallas. The store is approximately 15,000 square feet, Krieger said.
Also located in the Woodmont Shopping Center will be a Starbucks tentatively scheduled to open in March, said a Starbucks employee who did not want to be identified.
Shawn McDonald, also a superintendent for W.B. Kibler Construction, said a 6,000 square-foot building, also part of the Woodmont Shopping Center being built behind Pizza Hut on Tyler Avenue, will be completed in about three weeks.
The building will have space for about three businesses, McDonald said, but the spaces have not yet been leased.
The shopping center also has three more completed suites available for lease. There is also a 1,800 square-feet T-Mobile business, McDonald said, which is already open for business in the center.
Steak eaters will only have to wait a few more months for Logan's Roadhouse to open its doors for business. The restaurant will be on the frontage road off of Expressway 83 near Valle Vista Mall, and is expected to be operating by April, Kris Miles, a Logan's Roadhouse representative said.
Miles said the 7,200 square-foot building will serve as a casual dining steak house, and will generate about 120 jobs.
Miles said the company is setting up business in Harlingen because of the growth happening in the city and because the steak house usually follows big development like the Kohl's shopping center being built just down the road.
Kohl's will be the main tenant for the 50-acre development, Harlingen Corners, located on Tyler Avenue near Dixieland Road. Contractors on the development site said they could not comment on when the project would be finished.
But the contractors, who did not want to be identified, did say they expect Kohl's representatives to be in Harlingen during February to begin the process of hiring employees.
